The solution was simple. Right click on the little sound icon in the lower right. From here you can choose where the sound is outputted. On my new computer it was under Playback. The older one is under Output. Hope this helps. It turned out the sound was being sent to my speaker-less monitor thru the hdmi cable and needed to be switched to my speakers.
